Owens Outduels McDowell for $8,000 Victory in Hunt the Front Series Debut at Sugar Creek

BLUE RIDGE, Ga. (May 17, 2025) — Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., used an impressive turn-three slide job on lap 28 to slip past race-long leader Dale McDowell and held on through the final 13 circuits to win Friday’s 50-lap Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series debut at Sugar Creek Raceway. Owens edged McDowell by just 0.217 seconds at the checkers to collect the $8,000 winner’s purse and in recording the third HTF Series victory of his career and first of the season.

“I’m a little wore out right now, it’s a little rough up on that cushion,” Owens said after the race. “It was fun. I know I had to do something to try and get around Dale — he was just too smooth through the middle. I thought I could get him on a couple of them restarts… but the problem is, I was pushing right out with him. It was a good race and a fun little racetrack.”

Owens, who started fifth, earned his first HTF Series win since Aug. 19, 2023, at East Alabama Motor Speedway. He piloted the Koehler Motorsports No. 20 Rocket Chassis powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and backed by Reece Monument, Ultimate Towing & Recovery, and Boomtest Well Service.

The pole-starting McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., led the opening 27 laps before relinquishing the lead to Owens in the race’s final stage. Sam Seawright of Rainsville, Ala., rallied to second on a lap-15 restart but eventually settled for third after Owens reclaimed the spot on lap 19. Ricky Weiss was the night’s hard charger, advancing from 12th to finish seventh.

The 40-lap feature was marred by eight cautions and lasted 46 minutes. Multicar incidents on laps two and five, as well as mid-race chaos involving contenders like Joseph Joiner, Josh Putnam, and Tucker Anderson, kept the field scrambling.
